Australian Schoolboy Hewitt Wins Title
January 12, 1998 - 0:0
ADELAIDE Australian teenager Lleyton Hewitt took a break during the school holidays to became the second youngest title winner in ATP Tour history on Sunday. The 16-year-old Adelaide schoolboy claimed the Australian Men's Hardcourt Championships with a 3-6 6-3 7-6 victory over compatriot and fellow non-seed Jason Stoltenberg in two hours and nine minutes. Hewitt, who turns 17 next month, was the youngest ATP tournament winner since American Michael Chang in October, 1988.
Chang broke through with victory in San Francisco at the age of 16 years and seven months. Hewitt, who needed a wildcard to play in Adelaide, also entered the record books as the lowest-ranked player at 550 to claim an ATP title since the rankings were introduced in 1973. (Reuter)
